Field Days

Field Days are held annually at the Termuende Research Ranch near Lanigan, SK, one in the winter and one in the summer. These field days provide producers, researchers and clients with the opportunity to see the centre’s activities first hand. The days consist of guest speakers, technical presentations, and field tours.

Plan to attend our next summer field day scheduled for June 26, 2012

2011 Winter Field Day

The 2011 Winter Field day was held Friday, December 2, 2011. Close to fifty (50) people joined us for an afternoon of guided field tours of some of our current research projects.

Special thanks to Blair's Livestock for providing soup & sandwiches to warm up after the field tours.

2011 Summer Field Day

Marce and Scott Schultz

Western Beef's 2011 Summer Field Day was held Tuesday, June 21, 2011. The theme for this year's Field Day was "Weather Issues: What's Your Strategy?" Guest speakers included Environment Canada's Senior Climatologist, David Phillips and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture's Provincial Forage Specialist, Michel Tremblay.

We were fortunate to have representatives from the Termuende family in attendance - Marce and Scott Schultz of Illinois.

Similar to 2010, rainfall limited the number of field stops that could be made in the afternoon.

WBDC would like to thanks its Field Day sponsors and the 200 people who made it out for this year's Field Day.

2010 Summer Field Day

The Western Beef Development Centre’s annual Summer Field Day was held Tuesday, June 22, 2010.  This year’s theme was “Managing Herd Information, The Cattlemen's New Reality ”. Morning speakers presented on BIXS and the CCIA.

Due to heavy rainfall on Monday evening, not all the field tour stops were possible. Several of the researchers instead gave presentations at the Ranch.

WBDC would like to thank its Field Day sponsors and the 170 people who made it out for this year's Field Day. Many topped the day off with a delicious steak supper and visiting.

2009 Winter Field Day

After a few nice days in December, the air turned chill again for the WBDC's Winter Field day, held December 11, 2009. Despite -35 C temperatures, about 60 people turned up for this half-day event consisting of an afternoon of guided field tours of research projects in progress, a couple indoor presentations and a question and answer session. The field tours included:

  • bale grazing
  • backgrounding calves with swath grazing
  • backgrounding calves with swath grazing and wheat DDGS supplementation
  • grazing cows on pea and oat straw/chaff

Blairs' Livestock also hosted a Class of '09 Scholarship Heifer sale at the ranch Saturday, December 12th.

Each year, usually in the January to March time frame, the WBDC sponsors a series of cow/calf schools around the Province of Saskatchewan . These are typically one-day schools for producers where they can get current information on various aspects of the beef industry from WBDC staff and invited speakers.
